NEMES Anna

1989, Budapest, HU

Anna Nemes graduated from the Painting Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2014. She has presented her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Hungary and internationally. In 2023, she was awarded a grant by ACAX | Agency for Contemporary Art Exchange, through which she spent two months in 2024 at the Residency Unlimited studio residency in New York.

Nemes’s works, characterized by strong technical skill and precision, are increasingly defined by the dominant use of black. Abstract paint surfaces, delicately rendered oil-painted details, and their subtle interconnections form her compositions, offering insight into a unique dialogue between organic abstraction and figurative representation.

Alongside her visual art practice, Nemes is also active in filmmaking. Her film Gentle, co-directed with László Csuja, was the first Hungarian feature film selected for the competition program of the Sundance Film Festival. It has received numerous awards, including at the Raindance Film Festival (London), goEast Film Festival (Wiesbaden), Brussels International Film Festival, and Cleveland International Film Festival, and was awarded the Grand Prize at CinÉast (Luxembourg), as well as the Hungarian Film Critics’ Award for Best Director.
