GAÁL József

1960, Tahitótfalu, HU

József Gaál is a contemporary Hungarian visual artist, painter, graphic artist, and sculptor who, alongside his artistic career, also pursued pedagogical work and writing on art. One of the most distinctive and recurring motifs in his oeuvre is the grotesque, often “mask-like” face: these figures are not portraits, but condensed signs of psychological states and inner tensions. Graphic series played a prominent role early in his career; later, moving freely across different media, he constructed a coherent, symbolically charged artistic universe. He was also active as an educator at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, serving as an associate professor, and his work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Prima Primissima Prize.
