The French word *ensemble* can refer to a group forming a whole, while also carrying a sense of togetherness and shared presence. An ensemble implies a process of becoming whole: a mode of perception in which separate elements become visible in relation to one another, as parts of a shared system. Togetherness begins even before this. It requires neither unity, similarity, nor even a conscious connection. Mere presence is already enough to create a relationship. Through the works of sixteen artists from different backgrounds and artistic practices, ENSEMBLE explores this condition of existing alongside and in relation to one another.
Founded in 1995, Les 4 Arts – Paris Centre brings together artists from different generations and with diverse artistic approaches. Since its beginnings, a defining aspect of the Paris-based artists’ collective has been its exchange programme with European art groups: artists from Les 4 Arts exhibit in a partner country, and artists from that country are subsequently invited to take part in the next *Biennale Européenne des Blancs-Manteaux* in Paris. Over the past decades, similar collaborations have taken place with Kraków, Vienna, Vilnius, Mallorca and Rijeka, among others. This exhibition marks the first presentation in Budapest of works by members of the collective.
Painting, sculpture, photography and collage offer different ways of exploring nature, human relationships, memory, urban experience, dreams and inner worlds. Across these individual artistic languages, varying emphasis is placed on the freedom of the painted surface, gesture, colour, material, and the movement between reality and imagination. At first glance, the works create self-contained worlds. Harmony, however, does not necessarily arise from sameness. It can emerge through differences, contrasts, distances, or simply through the shared presence of distinct things within the same space. A form may become uncertain in the presence of another; a colour may acquire a new meaning; a personal memory, placed beside another work, may become part of a shared experience. Visibility may therefore lie precisely in what we do not notice at first: in the relationships that emerge between things.
ENSEMBLE creates a space for the moment when separate elements, without losing their individual character, begin to act upon one another; when difference gives rise to connection, and coexistence begins to form an ensemble.
